NFLC awarded International Research and Studies (IRS) grant

NFLC begins a series of research projects, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, to better understand the current scope of African language instruction in U.S. institutions of higher education, and the demand for additional instruction in African languages. This project is conducted in partnership with Howard University and University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).

Africa Through Language and Area Studies (ATLAS) Initiative Launched

Made possible through a University of Maryland’s Grand Challenges Grants, ATLAS was envisioned as a way to highlight and bring together Africa-related research, scholarship, courses and events happening across University of Maryland’s campus. The focus of ATLAS is on African and African diaspora studies, including African American, Afro Latino, and Caribbean studies.

Advanced Languages Courses

NFLC begins offering customizable Advanced Language Courses for Government Service in less commonly taught languages. Courses are aligned to the ILR scale, focus on topics that prepare students for global language proficiency tests, and include activities that simulate work environments.
